Pet-Friendly Lodging in Red River, NM
Finding the right place to stay is the first step. All of our rentals at Main Street Retreat are pet-friendly, allowing up to two well-behaved dogs in each rental.
Best Dog-Friendly Activities & Trails in Red River
Red River is surrounded by the vast Carson National Forest, which is perfect for hiking with dogs in Red River, NM. Always keep your dog leashed and carry water.
Red River Bark Park
Red River Bark Park is a dedicated, enclosed space on High Street in Red River for your dog to play off-leash safely. This is a favorite stop for our golden. She visits most afternoons when we’re in town. As it’s just a short 5-minute walk from Main Street Retreat, she gently (or maybe not so gently with her pulling) leads the way.
Enchanted Forest Dog Trails
In winter, the Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area offers designated trails specifically for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing with your dog.
Photo Ops and Shopping on Main Street
Take a walk down Main Street and take advantage of some fun tourist photo ops on oversized Adirondack chairs. Some gift shops, like Climates, are dog-friendly and even keep a small stock of dog souvenirs.
Top Trails for Hiking with Your Dog
Take a stroll on the Red River Nature Trail for a low-impact walk along the river or take the challenge up a notch with Middle Fork Lake Trail.
The nature trail (located in town) is perfect for your daily walk. Your dog will enjoy sniffing trees and spying on ducks in the water. Deer are also commonly spotted on this trail.
Middle Fork Lake Trail is moderate in intensity and ends at an alpine lake. Our dogs love hopping the lake to cool off as we sit and enjoy the views.
Dog-Friendly Dining in Red River
You don't have to leave your best friend in the hotel. There are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants in Red River.
Noisy Water Winery: Bring your pup along to sample local New Mexico wines and cheeses on their outdoor patio. They also allow dogs inside. When it’s chilly, ours love curling up by the fireplace while we enjoy beverages and snacks.
Red River Brewing Company and Distillery: Our dogs love the brewery patio, as it gets a lot of foot traffic (therefore, they get a lot of pets). We like sitting by the fire pit post dinner and people watching. The distillery tasting room is also dog-friendly and allows your dogs to come inside while you enjoy a craft cocktail.
Bull O’ the Woods Saloon: Their outdoor patio is dog-friendly and has plenty of space to spread out. Place your order inside and then enjoy watching a game or gazing up at the mountains outside.
Safety Tips for Traveling to Red River with a Dog
Altitude Acclimation: Red River is over 8,750 feet. Take the first day slow and monitor your dog's breathing.
Hydration: Always carry extra water. Rivers and streams may not be safe sources for drinking.
Wildlife: You are in a wilderness area. Keep your dog leashed and close by to prevent encounters with bears or elk.
